Many programs in which AMVETS are active benefit Veterans and the community
alike at the Post, State and National
levels. We are active in Veterans programs, such
as assistance for the homeless, hospitalized and disabled Veterans, assistance
for drug and alcohol abuse, blood donation programs, just to name a few. Just some of the programs in which AMVETS participates
in include:
For Veterans:
White Clover - Similar to the Veterans of Foreign Wars "poppy", 100% of AMVETS White Clover proceeds
are donated directly to disabled and hospitalized Veterans institutions, such as the Oregon Veterans Home located in The Dalles, Oregon.
National
Coalition for Homeless Veterans - AMVETS teams with the NCHV to shape public policy and gives input to the Veterans Administration
advisory committee on ways to end homelessness among Veterans.
Military Funeral Honors - In the local area, AMVETS teams with
the VFW and other VSO's to provide military funeral honors for fallen Veterans (21-gun salute, sounding of "Taps", presentation of
burial flag to family) as a tribute for their service to our country.
Task Force DVD - Troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan
are unable to engage in safe
entertainment due to the threats of snipers, bombs, mines and terrorist activities. Task Force DVD
simply collects new and used DVD's and CD's and sends them directly
to the troops to provide a method of safe entertainment.
For
Youth:
AMVETS Americanism Program - Is actually a competition in which children and teens
create a drawing, poster or essay, determined
by age and grade level, on what being an American means to them, hoping to instill a deeper sense of patriotism, under-standing and
appreciation for the sacrifices which were required to win the freedom we enjoy today. All entries are sent to AMVETS National
and a winner selected from each group each year.
Boy Scouts of America - AMVETS is a chartered partner with the BSA and has a
seat on the National BSA Community Relations Committee. Forty AMVETS posts serve as char-tered partners of packs, troops and
crews where more than 1,300 young people benefit from this outstanding educational program.
